The Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IBSCT–BAS) is pleased to invite you to the presentation of Dr. Milen Petrov’s monograph "The Crusade of Nicopolis (1396)", on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 15:30 at the IBSCT–BAS building (45 Moskovska St.).

The book presents the events of the late 14th century as more than just an account of the military operations that culminated before the walls of Nicopolis. The study focuses on the political relations among European rulers, the organization of the crusade, the participation of Western European knighthood, and the significance of the campaign within the history of the Balkans and Western Europe. The monograph includes an appendix featuring translations of previously little-known sources originating from France, the Holy Roman Empire, and the lands of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. This book represents the first attempt in the Bulgarian language to provide a comprehensive history of the Crusade of Nicopolis—covering everything from the preconditions for the campaign (linked to the Hungarian-Ottoman war that began in 1389) to the aftermath of its failure. Representatives from the publishing house "Millennium" will also be in attendance.

We look forward to welcoming you!
